Relative
bioavailbility(apparent) :
In relative
bioavilability a generic formulation is
compared with a standard formulation of same of same drug in same dosage form.This
can be assessed by comparing the data obtained from either plasma
concentration-time curve or urinary excretion data.Then relative bioavilability
is expressed as-
[AUC]a
[AUC]b
Expression for relative bioavialbility for same drug
given in 2 different doses-
[AUC]a /Dose
of a
[AUC]b / Dose of b
Here ,
AUC =Area under the
curve (indicated extent of availability of drug)
[AUC]a=Area under the curve for drug A
[AUC]b= Area under the
curve for drug B (standard).
Absolute
bioavailability :
It
is the amount of drug available in systemic circulation after administration
through extra vascular route when compared to
IV dosing.
This the image showing absolute biovailability of drug given through oral oral route and compared with IV dosing.(image taken from en.wikipedia.org)
Absolute
bioavailability is expressed as-
[AUC]po/Dose (po)
[AUC]iv/Dose iv
Here ,
[AUC]po = Area under the
curve of drug administered through oral route.
Dose po = Dose given through oral route
[AUC]Iv = Area under the
curve of drug administered through IV route.
