Can Coconut Oil Help You To Lose Weight and Belly Fat
Coconut oil is extracted from the nut of coconut palm. Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are fatty acids that have an aliphatic tail of 6–12 carbon atoms.
The fatty acids found in MCTs are called medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). MCTs are composed of a glycerol backbone and three fatty acids..
Rich sources for MCTs include coconut oil ,palm ,kernel oil.Other edible oils predominantly contains long-chain fatty acids.
Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) diffuse passively from the GI tract and are sent to the liver without any modifications like long chain fatty acids, where they are either used for energy or converted into ketone bodies.
Several studies show that you can lose fat by adding coconut oil in your diet.
In one study, rats were overfed with long chain and medium chain fats seperately. The group of rats fed with medium chain fatty acids gained 20% less weight and 23% less body fat compared to the group of rats fed with long chain fatty acids
from the above study it is evident that medium chain fatty acids are stored less efficiently than long chain fatty acids
Thermogenic Property
Another property of coconut oil is that it is "thermogenic" . adding it to diet increases the energy expenditure (burning of fat) compared to the same quantity of calories from other fats (1).
In a study, intake of 15-30 grams of medium chain fats per day increased energy expenditure by 5%, totaling about 120 calories per day (2).
Several studies confirm that When humans replace the long chain fats in their diet with MCT fats, they burn more calories (3).
Reduction of Apetite
Intake of coconut oil reduces appetite and hence make us take in low calories.
It is evident from studies that Medium chain fatty acids increases feeling of fullness and result in reduction of calorie intake (4) when compared to the intake of same quantity of calories from long chain fats
Medium chain fatty acids are converted to ketone bodies in liver that can have a powerful appetite reducing effect (5, 6, 7).
In a study of 6 healthy men, eating a high amount of MCTs caused them to automatically eat 256 lesser calories per day (8).
In another study of 14 healthy men, intake of MCTs at breakfast ate significantly fewer calories at lunch (9).
So,coconut oil not only boosts burning of fat (increases "calories out") but it also reduces the appetite (reduces "calories in").
In fact, there are several studies that support this.
In a study , 40 women were given either 30 grams (2 tablespoons) of coconut oil or soybean oil for 28 days.
They were suggested to take lesser calories and walk every day. These were the results (10):
•Both groups lost weight of about 2 pounds.
•The group which took coconut had decreased their waist size (belly fat) while the soybean oil actually had a slight increase in belly fat.
•The HDL (good) cholesterol levels are increased in coconut oil group while the group which took soybean oil had reduced HDL and increased LDL levels
From the above it is evident that coconut oil did not cause overall weight loss compared to soybean oil, but it did lead to a significant reduction in belly fat.
In another study in obese men were given 30 grams of coconut oil for 4 weeks . waist size in these obese people are reduced by 2.86 cms(11).
There are also few other studies showing that medium chain fats lead to weight loss, reduced waist size and various improvements in metabolic health (12, 13).
The weight loss effect of coconut oil appear to be fairly mild, except for the reduction of belly fat.
Reduction in abdominal fat is likely to have very positive effects on your metabolism, longevity and reduce your risk of chronic disease.
Conclusion
Coconut oil combined with other proven weight loss methods like low carbs ,increasing protein , daily exercise can show significant impact on weight loss.
