What is Difference between Emulsion and Suspension
EMULSIONS
1.These are Biphasic liquid formulations which contains two immisicible liquids. One of
the liquids is dispersed as minute
globules in other liquid.
2. Globule size of
dispersed liquid ranges from
0.25 to 25ยตm.
3. Stability of emulsion is achieved by adding Emulsifying
agent.
4. Emulsions are of 2 types O/W and W/O emulsions
5. There are tests to confirm type of emusions.
6. Freezing should be avoided as it leads to cracking.
7. Opaque in
appearance
8. Compounded emulsions are used for both topical and oral applications.
8. Compounded emulsions are used for both topical and oral applications.
SUSPENSION
1.These are Biphasic liquid formulations in which
fine solid particles are
dispersed in liquid. They are appropriate when the drug which is to be incorporated is not sufficiently soluble in an ordinary solvent or cosolvent system.
2.Particle size of solid suspended in liquid varies from 0.5
to 5 microns
3.Stability of suspension is achieved by adding suspending agent.
4.Suspensions are of 2 types flocculated suspensions and
deflocculated suspensions
5.There are no testt confirm suspensions
6.Freezing should be avoided during storage otherwise it will lead to aggregation.
7.Opaque when mixed but on standing components becomes clear and separate.
8.Suspensions are used both orally and topically.
